THE CHARACTERS

Lukas Becker

Lukas is a quiet, thoughtful composer and pianist from West Berlin who repairs pianos like his father. Observant rather than shy, he understands the world through music and finds inspiration in ordinary people and their stories. His dream is not fame, but to compose something that outlives him and might one day make someone feel less alone.

Clara Braun

Clara is a warm, confident and optimistic photographer from East Berlin who notices the details others overlook. Given her first camera by her grandfather, she believes everyday lives and moments are worth preserving. When she meets Lukas, she realises that while she captures life through photographs and he through music, they are both trying to preserve the same thing.

Eric Bauer

Eric is a confident, funny and easygoing bar owner from West Berlin and Lukas’s closest childhood friend. Although the two could hardly be more different, they share a strong and lasting friendship. Eric is deeply loyal to those he loves, especially his parents in East Berlin, making the division of the city intensely personal for him.

Ava Weber

Ava is the serious and capable owner of the café, with a deep affection for her customers and employees. She has quietly loved Lukas for years, but immediately recognises that he and Clara belong together and even helps bring them closer. When the Wall separates them, Ava puts aside her own pain to support Clara, making her story one of quiet strength, loyalty and selfless love.

Noah Adler

Noah is a gentle, reliable and patient waiter who has worked at Ava’s café since his teens and considers it his home. Naturally caring, he becomes Clara’s closest friend during her years apart from Lukas. Like a younger brother to her, Noah never tries to replace Lukas, but quietly helps Clara hold on to hope that they will one day be reunited.

Thea Bauer

Thea is intelligent, kind, funny and practical, with a quiet nature that often keeps her in the background. Recently graduated with an Arts degree, she loves books and art and is still deciding what she wants from life. While others may command more attention, Thea is a thoughtful observer who often sees more than people realise.

Otto

Otto is energetic, resourceful and always dreaming up a new scheme or business idea. When the Wall traps him in East Berlin, his restless nature becomes a determination to escape. Always searching for another possibility, Otto refuses to accept the Wall as permanent and is constantly looking for a way around it, under it or through it.
